DOWN MEMORY LANE – PICTURES AND COVERAGE FROM DUBAI LYNX 2007

Dubai Lynx announced the winners of the Dubai Lynx Awards 2007 for awarding creative excellence in the Middle East and North Africa on 19 March at Dubai Media City Amphitheatre. A shortlist of 388 ads had been announced earlier from the 1,679 entries submitted. The Dubai Lynx jury comprising creative professionals from leading advertising agencies around the world awarded a total of 111 Dubai Lynx trophies.

In the Print category, 39 winners were announced, Direct had 22, Outdoor had 17, TV/Cinema had 14, Interactive had 12, Radio had four winners and the Integrated category had three winners. All categories had Grand Prix winners except the Integrated one.

As I had indicated in my earlier post on Dubai Lynx shortlist of winners, UAE led the show with 88 awards. Next in line were our friends from Egypt, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia each winning seven trophies and with Bahrain taking home two awards.

Saatchi & Saatchi Dubai swept the Dubai Lynx Awards in so many categories that the announcer suggested they move their chair to the stage. The team won the first Dubai Lynx Agency of the Year trophy, with JWT Dubai coming in second place and Team/Y&R in third.

  1. Hey Zeid – these pics are of the first Dubai Lynx that was held last year.

Great Coverage As Usual …. Farroukh

Will link to it soon on mediaME.com

  3. Lovely – I could put this across to the right people and perhaps even invite a discussion on this point if you could email me with your details – for the sake of DM – a category we both like :-)

Well, yes I am aware of the point system, but any BTL agency will loose out in the shortlist itself. For example, Wunderman had 27 shortlists, that’s 27 points, however any ATL agency that has say 20 campaigns shortlisted, gets 60 points, if we take an average of 3 executions per campaign.

If one point had been awarded to every shortlisted campaign, then even with 27 shortlists, 1 Gold, 5 Silvers and 6 Bronzes, we have a pretty good score that would qualify for the 2nd or 3rd place for Agency of the Year.

I guess the organisers should take this into consideration for next year

  5. You have made some interesting points, Lovely.

Are you saying that while a BTL agency will usually submit one execution per DM campaign, an ATL company can submit many ads per campaign and each ad would be counted as one separate entry? If so, we’ll have to check this with the organisers.

Just to help you understand the weightage per entry for Agency of the Year selections, here is the point breakup that is used to calculate it:

    Grand Prix: 10 points
    Gold: 7 points
    Silver: 5 points
    Bronze: 3 points
Shortlist: 1 point (maximum of 10 points)

So, an agency with one Grand Prix, for example, will have more points (10) than one with three Bronze awards (3×3=9).

BTL and Interactive Agency of the Year awards sound good to me, personally.

    Thank you for your reply.

With this point system, no Direct Marketing agency can ever qualify for The Agency of the Year as we get one point per shortlist and ATL get a point for every shortlisted execution!

So, I think that the whole system is extremely unfair as with 12 awards, Wunderman would have definitely been a contender for Agency of the Year!

That’s why I feel its worth mentioning that Wunderman had 12 awards, which is the 2nd largest number of awards! Or have a separate BTL Agency of the Year Category as we really cannot be competing with ATL.

  7. Hi Lovely,

Welcome to my blog. Wunderman Dubai happens to be one of my favourite agencies in the region. For the Agency of the Year, the number of awards is important but more points per award are given to agencies getting a Grand Prix or a Gold. So, agencies with Grand Prix or Gold wins may have less awards in number but higher points to be considered for Agency of the Year nomination.

At the beginning of the event it was mentioned that the world knew Middle East was ready to have its own awards after Tonic’s Gold Lion at Cannes and Wunderman’s first ever DM Gold Lion for the region the very next year.

Hey, wunderman won 12 awards, the 2nd largest amount of awards after Saatchi & Saatchi’s 16. How come no one ever remembers Direct Marketing?
