Dear Farrukh, I am a regular reader of your blog, even while i was in the ad scene in India, and trying to come to the UAE. Your writes were very useful and help me get a picture of the ad scene in the Middle East. I tried contacting you by mail several times but never got a single reply. Eventually in the month of November, i landed a job in a multinational agency in Dubai. Quiet unfortunately in the month of March, recession affected my company and they decided to lay off 20% of the staff. My name was also in the list. Its been two months since i lost my job and i still have not managed to find a new job till now. I dont know if anyone is still hiring. It would be of great help if you could let me know of any vacancies in the Middle East. I am an advertising copywriter with over 3 years experience in the field of advertising. I have completed my Post graduation in Journalism and Mass Communication with 2 university gold medals from a well known Indian University.

Dear John,

Sorry to hear about your situation. You are not alone, my friend. A lot of creative people are having to come terms with sudden terminations, including so many people I personally know. And my apology for not having had the chance to answer your emails – I did go back and read them after seeing your post.

I try in earnest to answer most comments and emails I receive but the past few months have been challenging for me, as you might have read in one of my earlier blog posts – so missed many mails in between the speed bumps of life.

In my opinion, looking for a job in a time when companies are firing isn’t the best option. One has to think out of the box and see how best to survive during this rough patch. Part-time? Freelance? Tie-ups with art people who freelance? Client side jobs?

The solution to redundancies in a recession, I think, is not trying harder to get another job. It’s spotting market opportunities where your skills can be valuable.

Yes, what I am saying is going to sound very vague unless you get it. There is no magic bullet – just the need to think out of the box and create a new path wth your talent. Hope that helps.

Dear Farrukh,

Iam in Dubai for last 6 months, landed up here after my marriage. I was working in India in The Times of India in Ad Sales and previously as media planner. I have overall 5 yrs of work experience and looking for a job similar to my previous work and profile. But, unfortunately I landed up here in this hard period of recession. As, I don have any UAE experience, its very difficult for me to get a job at this time when people with UAE experience sitting jobless. Please guide me with some suggestions what should I do at present situation to get a job in Dubai. I also want to know what can be a expecting salary for me with this experience in this market at this moment as well as when market gets open.

Regards,
Sangeeta

Dear Farrukh,

It was great to read your blog and get a real perspective on the advertising industry in Abu Dhabi. i just completed my bachelors in Journalism and Communication from India and I majored in Advertising. I am really interested in Client Servicing and have interned before in one of the top global agencies. I wanted to know whether companies are still recruiting in Client servicing or Media Planning in Abu Dhabi ?

It is an awful time to be graduating and looking for a job. It would be great if you could solve my query.

Regards,

Nida

Hi Nida,

Job prospects are tough these days – like you rightly wrote. But Abu Dhabi is rising – more jobs on the client side than the agency side. Keep trying – I wish you the best!

Wa Aleikum As Salam Salim,

Qualification is never more important than ability and talent. A degree at the end of the day is just a piece of paper.

Do what you believe in – be the best at it. You WILL succeed, Insha Allah.

Not a good time right now mate – I heard of a big layoff in a big ad agency just today. One more of my ad friends has been hit, hard, by the recession. But we march on.

Hi Farrukh,

You made my day. I liked most especially your blog on Freelance Copywriter in Abu-Dhabi-why it’s good to have one. That’s very amusing.

Thank you for your information on copywriter jobs. I hope you can post more job openings since I am interested in applying this year.

Mimi

Hi Shekar,

The ad scene in the UAE seems to be improving a bit – I had two job offers coming in today (now that I am on my own as a freelance writer). I’d still suggest you clinch a deal via email etc before you invest time and money doing the agency rounds here. Plus, on my recent visit to India – I noticed that people are making an obscene amount of money without having to worry too much about visas, rents, national IDs, etc.
